STORAGE INSURANCE
If you currently have homeowner's or renter's insurance,
confirm with your agent If an off-premise storage unit
is covered under your policy. If not, or if you're interested in
obtaining Contents Insurance, inquire in the office and we'll be
happy to provide you with an application through TenantOne Insurance.
**Please note, whether you decide to get Contents Insurance or
not, please make sure that any irreplaceable items stored in
your unit, such as pictures or photo albums, are in sealed
plastic storage containers. All units have built-in fire sprinklers,
therefore if your contents got wet, water could ruin items that can't be replaced.

El Dorado Storage Center’s goal is to provide convenient, secure and safe self-storage solutions for customers within our county… If you’re not sure whether you can store certain items in your unit, check out our safe storage tips below.
Some items may seem as though they're safe to store at home or at your business, but we don't allow them at El Dorado Storage Center. Here's a quick rundown of the items that we do NOT allow to be stored...
COMBUSTIBLE, FLAMMABLE, TOXIC OR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
• Gas, Diesel, Kerosene Cans or Tanks
• All Gas - Powered Tools, Fertilizers
• Any kind of Oil, Grease, Batteries or Corrosives
• Propane or Oxygen Tanks
• Firearms, Fireworks
• Flammable or Hazardous Items
• Radioactive Supplies or Toxic Waste
• Drugs or Paraphernalia
• Contraband or Stolen Items
ANY FOOD ITEMS OR GARBAGE
Any type of food, pet food or garbage is not allowed to be stored. Stored food items, or food drippings that have not been cleaned out of BBQ’s can cause unwanted pests. The last thing we want to do is charge you for an exterminator to come out because of critter infestation!
TIRES
You may have some extra tires laying around taking up space, and think storage would be a great place to get these out of your way. Unfortunately, you may not store these items in your unit. Disposing of tires is cost prohibitive, and they are very difficult to put out should the catch fire.
ANY KIND OF MOTORIZED VEHICLE
Unfortunately, we cannot allow storage for any motorized or battery-operated vehicle. Motorcycles may be allowed as long as the gas tank has been removed out, but only with the landlord's written permission. (Unfortunately, we do not offer RV or boat storage.)
Have questions about anything not listed above? Just come on into the office and talk to us.
We're happy to give assistance on items you can and cannot store in your unit.
HELPFUL TIPS & TRICKS
FOR STORAGE UNIT RENTERS
Packing Tips for Storage
At El Dorado Storage Center, we want to make self-storage as stress-free and efficient as possbile for our customers. We have complied some of the tricks and techinques we have learned over the years so you can pack, orgazine, and store your boxes like a pro.
You can do this by placing labels or markings on the box that identify the room they belong in and a brief description of the contents.
It’s also helpful to mark any boxes which include fragile or heavy items, so you know when stacking your boxes in your self storage unit, that the fragile boxes shouldn’t have anything stacked on top of them, and the heavy boxes should be placed on the bottom.
The worst thing to happen when packing items is to forget what you put in each box. Even though it’s a bit time consuming, labeling your boxes on all four sides will help you know what is in the box from any angle once it’s placed in your self storage unit, in case you need to get something.
When packing your belongings, pack only what belongs in each room or area together. It’s a good idea to keep like items together to make them easier to find should you need to access them while they’re in storage, as well as unpacking later. Don’t mix a bunch of random things together. When placing boxes in your storage unit, it’s really helpful to stack boxes for the same rooms together, which will make it easier to find something specific should the need arise.
– Let’s face it….moving is NOT fun. If you’re lucky enough to have friends willing to help you, the last thing you want to do is break yours or their backs if your boxes are too heavy. Distribute the weight between boxes, so you don’t injure yourself or your helpers. Remember, what goes into your storage unit, must eventually come out, so don’t make it so painful that no one wants to come back to help you move out!
Make sure you have enough packing supplies on-hand to wrap and protect your fragile or breakable items. If you know you’re going to be moving, start saving packing materials from any deliveries you may get to your home. When packing fragile or breakable items, make sure to wrap them well, then place the heavier items on the bottom and lighter ones on the top. It’s helpful to pack these items in smaller boxes so they can be placed on the very top of other boxes to keep them safe and protected in your storage unit.
If you have items such as pictures, photo albums or other items that cannot be replaced, it’s best to store these in water-tight bins with lids. If the fire sprinklers turn on, they’ll be ruined which will break our hearts right along with yours.
If you’re going to be using a trailer or a moving truck to deliver your belongings to a storage unit, it’s best to first contact the storage facility office to make sure there isn’t a size limit on how big a trailer or truck can be in order to get around the facility. The last thing you want to do is rent something and pack it all up, then get to the storage facility and find out that it’s too big to get to your storage unit. At El Dorado Storage Center, depending upon where the unit is located, we can only accommodate a 20’ moving truck or certain size trailers, (depending upon the size of the vehicle towing it) in order to make it around the corners of our facility. Make sure you call the storage office first, so you can plan accordingly.
You’d think that packing a trailer or moving truck isn’t even something you’d need to consider, but when moving into a self storage facility, especially if you might be there for a while, it’s more important than you may think. The reason this is so important is you’ll need to consider what items you may need to get to after you’ve moved into the storage unit, and pack your vehicle & trailer or moving truck accordingly. Here’s a few tips that will make this much easier and more efficient for you, saving you time and sore muscles.
How you pack a moving truck is a little different, because the heavier items are supposed to go in the truck first to balance out the weight load and prevent them from sliding around. This will create double work for you though when it comes to unloading into the storage unit, because you want the heavy furniture & appliances to be stored in the very back of the storage unit first, since you won’t be needing these items while they are in storage.
If you pack the moving truck this way, then all the boxes that you pack in the truck after the furniture & appliances, have to come out first and be placed outside the storage unit, causing you to have to move them twice. It’s a sucky enough job having to move these items once, so to save yourself time and energy, try packing the heavy furniture & appliances in the back and both sides of the truck, and put your boxes in the middle of this “U” shape configuration inside the truck. This way you can unload the furniture/heavier items out of the sides and back of the truck first and place into the back of the storage unit, then unload the boxes into the front of the storage unit, so you don’t have to handle your items twice.
Tie down any heavy furniture & appliances that you can, then use padded moving blankets, extra pillows, blankets, or towels to fill in the gaps or cover items from scratches/damage. By filling in these holes, you can ensure that boxes and other items won’t start sliding around. Plus, it adds a layer of padding between any fragile items and heavy furniture.
Padded moving blankets, appliance dollies and hand-trucks can usually be rented with the moving truck, and some companies also have special boxes for fragile items such as mirrors, pictures, glasses and other fragile items that you can buy to protect your belongings. We recommend that you move TV’s or other high-value items in your vehicle, to ensure they don’t get damaged from the bouncing around that can happen in a moving truck.
Depending up whether you’re going to be storing furniture and/or a lot of boxes, the best way to make use of all the room in your storage unit, is to use your vertical space! Stacking items limits how much is on the floor, making it easier for you to maneuver through your storage unit. Storing couches on their sides can give you a ton of extra room. Storing vertically also means you can store heavy items down low and light items up higher. If you’re going to be storing your belongings for an extended period of time, all our units have 9’ ceilings, compared with the 8’ industry standard, so make the most of all this extra space!
The best way to store your belongings, is to load the heavy furniture/appliance items into your unit first and place them in the back of the unit. These should be items you know you will not have need for while they are in storage. After those are in, if you’ve done a good job labeling your boxes, it’s best to start stacking your items/boxes together by the room they came out of. Put in the boxes for the rooms that you don’t think you’ll need access to first, then put the remaining boxes for rooms like the kitchen and bathroom in last. This way, if you happen to need something, all the boxes for that room will be grouped together and closer to the front of the unit to make them easier to access should the need arise.
If you’re uncertain whether anything might leak or cause a stain, place cardboard on the floor under your belongings. (Plastic tarps can cause white effervescence to coat the floor, so we don’t recommend using these.) In the summer, uncleaned food drippings in BBQ’s or certain types of candles that melt, can cause large stains on the floor. In the winter, condensation can cause anything metal, including file cabinets, cans with metal bottom rings or hangers to leave rust stains on the floor.
